June 29, 1942-November 16, 2015
Charles, Charlie, Grandad, Granddaddy, Dad, Charlie Brown, the Charlie Lama—just a few of the names he was known by. But by any name, he was beloved by many from all walks of life. He made no secret that he had run fast and hard for many years. Until he came to a turning point in his life and brought his earned wisdom, charisma, faith, humor and generosity to family, friends, and even strangers.
He spent the last 13 years of his life devoted to his six grandchildren and gaining yet another nickname: “Granddaddy-nanny” to Caitlin, Reese, Teagan, Connor, Jarred and Tyler. He was their much beloved confidant, mentor, teacher, friend and grandfather. Charlie supported his son, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Cathie, in countless ways, the most important being his daily involvement in his grandchildren’s lives. His absence will be felt by all of them every day.
On November 16, 2015 he joined his cherished daughter, Bonnie Elizabeth Mayfield, sister Sarah Frank and brother-in-law Jimmy Smith in the arms of our Lord. He leaves behind his sisters Dolly Grimes and Joyce Smith whom he deeply loved. He was a dedicated friend to his children’s mother, Bonnie Williams.
He will be sorely missed by his son-in-law Jeff Mayfield, his brothers-in-law Rick Grimes and Edward Frank, and his nieces and nephews Michael Laxton, Damon Laxton, Vince Smith, Jenifer Attaway, Steven Frank, Alana Frank and their children, all of whom he dearly loved.
His friends are far too many to count, and while he will be missed by all, he left a lasting positive impact on their lives that will never be forgotten.
