Clifford "Cliff" Denny Hume, 76, of Memphis, Tennessee passed away at home on July 20,2023 after a long illness of Alzheimer's. He was born November 18,1946 in Memphis. Known for his kind and caring personality and dedication to his family, Cliff proudly wore the label of "hard worker" throughout his life and passed these traits down to his two daughters and his son-in-law.
Cliff is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sheilla, his daughters Lisa Hume and Laura Buchanan and son-in-law Wayne Buchanan. He was proud of their accomplishments and their compassion for others. He has many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Leo and Virginia Hume, and his brother Robert Hume.
Cliff graduated from Central High School. He pursued higher education at Memphis State University. He taught surveying and building skills at William R. Moore Technology for two years
In addition to his civilian life, Cliff served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. He was proud of his military associations and the friends he acquired during his service.
He gained associations and skills that served him well throughout his life and career.
Throughout his career, Cliff held various positions. He began his professional journey as a paperboy for The Commercial Appeal, delivering papers on his bicycle. He worked as a superintendent for several construction companies, including Grinder Tabor Grinder and TDL Contractors. Cliff supervised the construction of numerous commercial buildings during his career. He played a significant role in building churches in Memphis and Mississippi. Notably, he worked on the construction of Eudora Baptist Church and later served as the superintendent for its demolition. His career came full circle, showcasing his love for his hometown, Memphis.
Cliff was an active member of Raleigh Church of Christ, where he worshipped for many years. He dedicated his time to the youth ministry and was well-known for driving the "Joy Bus" every Sunday morning, picking up children for church. His daughters often accompanied him, assisting with roll call. Driving the "Young at Heart" bus for the elderly was another fondly remembered church "duty".
Starting with a love of riding and racing motorcycles as a young man to buying his first Harley in 2005, he and Sheilla began many adventures while touring America! Other hobbies were fun times at Greers Ferry Lake where he and James Dacus would pull skiers with their boats. They would often be found on the pontoon boat resting with their eyes closed. Cliff was also able to show off his auto mechanic skills as a "pit crew" member for local race car driver, Sam Swindell, at Riverside Raceway. This skill was taught to Cliff by Joe Nicholson, owner of Hattley’s Garage on Madsion. Cliff walked into the garage and asked for a job. Joe taught him how to overhaul a car, but more importantly taught him talents he would use all his life.
Cliff will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His kind nature, sense of humor, and devotion will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Family and friends provided care for Cliff during his long illness with a special salute to Fereidoon Parsioon, M.D., his friend and physician. Mike Vernon and Blake Henry were incredible caregivers. Cliff would light up when they came to stay. Also, a special thanks to Amedisys who provided a team of Hospice professionals that made it easy for Cliff to pass easily at home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Page Robbins Alzheimer’s Day Care Center, 1961 So. Houston Levee Rd., Collierville, TN 38017 or a donation to their own favorite entity.
