September 28, 1932 - March 27, 2023
Cornelia “Connie” Nelson Pittman transitioned peacefully from earthly life on Monday, March 27, 2023. She was born Wednesday, September 28, 1932, the fourth child of Cornelia McGehee Nelson and Albert Edward Nelson.
A life long Memphian, Connie grew up in Memphis but enjoyed spending summers with her grandmother on the farm in Mississippi. She attended and graduated from Memphis Technical High School in 1951. The class had an enduring bond that spanned more than sixty years after graduation with members gathering for large reunions, special events and monthly dinners. Following graduation, her work career included positions at the Medical Group, Humko Products, the Summit Club, and her beloved John Deere where she was one of the first women in the Co-op Advertising Division of the company. She concluded her career in the ad specialty business working for Larry Crum Company and finally for National Awards. Following her official retirement, she continued to work for the Helen Britt Show, the Farm and Gin Show, and as Shelby County Poll Worker.
A devout Episcopalian, Connie attended Church of the Holy Communion in Memphis for many years. She was a Lay Reader and a Lay Eucharistic Minister. She served on numerous committees and helped at the Church in any way she could.
Additionally, Connie volunteered in the community for many organizations. She was a member of Zonta International which works to improve the lives of women. She volunteered with the youth talent division of the Mid-South Fair where she was a board member and a certificate holder. In her role with youth talent, she served as a Mid-South Fair representative at local and regional youth talent shows where she extended invitations to deserving young talent to compete in the Youth Talent Competition at the Mid-South Fair. Her closing remarks always included(paraphrased): Remember, the youth of today are our leaders of tomorrow. She also volunteered for Muscular Dystrophy, WKNO and the Junior League Tea Room.
Connie generously opened her home to family, friends and her beloved canine, her Boxers and Boston Terriers. One of her favorite times was summer with family and friends around the pool.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Cornelia McGehee Nelson and Albert Edward Nelson, two sisters: Virginia Nelson Harmon and Eula Nelson Jordan, one brother: Edward Nelson, and three nieces: Theresa Beaty, Dewey Keener, and Tiffany Taylor.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her great niece Tiffany Cockman(Brandon) who lovingly cared for her Aunt Connie for the last three years of her life, niece, Charlotte Potter(Jack) and great nephew, Scott Potter(Elesa) along with numerous additional nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and great great great nieces and nephews. Connie's family extends sincere thanks to Baptist Trinity Hospice Care for their kindness and support.
Interment at Friendship Cemetery in Como, Mississippi with graveside services on April 5, 2023 at 2:00pm.
