Downing "Sonny" S. Newman, Jr.

Capt. Downing “Sonny” S. Newman, Jr. 78, of Memphis, TN passed away on Monday, December 7th, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife Brenda Hand Newman, son Downing Newman, III, daughter Sylvia Newman Flack and a son-in-law Robert H. Flack, Sr. Mr. Newman is survived by his granddaughter Brandy Flack, grandson Robert H. Flack, Jr. (Ashley), great-grandchildren, Lauren, Amelia, Ian and Luke, brothers-in-law Mike Hand (Beth) and Jimmy Hand, brother Max Newman (Jan) and other friends and family. The family would like to thank both Dr. Melvin Kraus and Dr. Gordon Kraus for their compassionate care. Mr. Newman served proudly for the U.S. Marine Corp. He retired from the Memphis Police Dept. after 38 years as a police officer. Not only did he like to squirrel hunt, he also enjoyed; eating fried chicken, Payne’s BBQ, watching FOX News, collecting and gardening. The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, December 12th from 9-10am with a funeral starting at 10am at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN.
