Gary was born in Louisville, KY on October 11, 1942. He lived in Memphis for almost his entire life. He saw the broader world when he served in the US Navy from 1960-63, mostly on the destroyer USS Norris. He served as one of the ship’s mailmen, going by the nickname “Stamps”.
Gary was a firefighter for the Memphis Fire Department for nearly 30 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Though he was always humble about his experience and skills, he was seen by many of his men as an inspiring example of the unfailing competence needed in a dangerous job.
Gary would, on a whim, take long drives through the Mid-South and beyond. Some of his favorite destinations were small country raceways, to watch stock car races. But most of the trips were just excuses to hit the road, to see places he hadn’t before.
Gary will be remembered as a wholly reliable and generous provider for his family and friends. It was dangerous to complement anything he owned, as he might then try to give it to you.
Gary will be loved and remembered by his ex-wife and caregiver Sarah Landrum, his stepson James Newton, his stepdaughter Robin Ballard (wife of David Ballard, and mother of Tessa Ballard), and his son Alfred Landrum (husband of Angela Fazio-Landrum). He is also survived by his two sisters, Nita Surratt and Martha Scallions, and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was predeceased by his sisters, Linda Thompson and Betty Noe, and by his parents, Leon and Louise Landrum.
A graveside service for Gary will be held Thursday, July 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd, Memphis, Tennessee. Following the graveside service will be a visitation at 12:30 PM at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, Tennessee.
Gary will be laid to rest in Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road, Memphis, Tennessee.
