

It is with profound sadness that the family of James Allen McMillian, III announces his passing on February 15, 2026 at the age of 26. Born April 13, 1999, James was a lifelong Memphian. He attended Grahamwood Elementary School, where he was part of the optional/gifted program, and continued his education at Holy Rosary Catholic School for middle school. James graduated with honors from Christian Brothers High School in 2017. He pursued higher education at the University of Memphis and furthered his studies in computer technology and IT at Tech901.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Allen McMillian, Jr. He is survived by his loving mother, Denise Johnson and his bonus-father, David Johnson, Sr.; two sisters, Kelsey Les and Macy Johnson; and one brother, "DJ" David Johnson, Jr. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Jerry and Carolyn Robinson; his paternal grandparents, "Smokie" James Allen McMillian, Sr. and Johnnie McMillian; and by a wide circle of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Known for his vibrant spirit, kind heart, and off-the-wall humor, James had a unique ability to make everyone around him laugh. He shared many inside jokes and could communicate volumes with just a look. He had a deep love for animals, especially his cats named Kiwi, Cherry, and Ube. James enjoyed hiking with friends and family through Wolf River Trails and Natchez Trace State Park. He had a passion for gaming and collected retro games and gaming consoles. He was a card game enthusiast, particularly enjoying Yugioh and Pokemon.
James was an impressive mathematician and had a natural affinity for computers, where he excelled in IT. He loved playing golf with his Papa, little brother DJ, and bonus dad, David. He was on the golf team during middle school at Holy Rosary and achieved a remarkable hole in one on the par 3, 3rd hole at Windyke Country Club when he was just 12 years old.
A talented clarinet player, James participated in the CBHS pep band and concert band. Even though he only started learning to play in high school, James was a fast learner and was part of the All-West Tennessee Honor Band during high school and played in the University of Memphis marching band, The Mighty Sound of the South. He was also a gifted and amazing piano player, playing simply by ear.
James also enjoyed working catering jobs with his bonus dad, who often remarked on his efficiency and speediness.
Services will be held at Memphis Funeral Home, located at 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119, on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM and his celebration of life service will follow at 3:00 PM. Burial will occur afterwards at Memorial Park South Woods.
