He accepted Christ at an early age at Dean Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Cormorant, MS. He later united in membership with Unity Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN.
Jothan graduated from Carver High School in Memphis, TN in 1968. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired in November of 1992 after rendering 24 years of service. In August of 1993, he came out of retirement and gained employment with the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. In March of 2015, he again retired after 22 years of service.
He was married to then later divorced from Ruth Cobb Hobbs and to this union one daughter, Danielle LaKrystal Hobbs was born.
Daniel was the patriarch of his family and he took great pride in making sure that his family was well taken care of. His love, support and devotion was extended to every family member and each one had a special bond with him. He was known as the “Chief Grill Master” and he loved to share his cooking skills with his family. He also loved playing bid whist with the siblings, nieces and nephews. And whenever everybody got the phone call from him saying, “Come see me”, they knew there was a blessing in store for them. He taught his nephews two of life’s greatest lessons with the first being, “Don’t count your money in front of nobody” and second being his favorite slogan, “Win if you can; lose if you must, but always cheat!” He also enjoyed spending time in Tunica, MS relaxing at the casinos.
Jothan transitioned to eternal peace on April 3, 2021 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Franklin D. Hobbs, Robert W. Hobbs and Christine Hobbs Campbell.
He leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Danielle LaKrystal Hobbs of Memphis, TN and Zoe L. Hardwicke (Daryl) of Ipswich, Suffolk-England; one son, Damien M. Hobbs of Ipswich, Suffolk-England; three brothers, Vernon Hobbs (Ernestine) of Olive Branch, MS, Cleotha Hobbs (Cindy) of Lynnhaven, FL and Andrew Hobbs (Jeanette) of Memphis, TN; six sisters, Ella Mosby, Teresa Fondren, Gloria Singleton, Jacqueline Hobbs, Brenda Carr (Glenn) and Terral Lawson (Charles) all of Memphis, TN; two sisters- in law, Marilyn Hobbs and Remell Hobbs, both of Memphis, TN; two granddaughters, Amiyah Hardwicke and Kia-Rose Hardwicke of Ipswich, Suffolk-England; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 12, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at M.J. Edwards F.H. Stage Road Chapel, 4445 Stage Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38128. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 11:00 AM, M. J. Edwards F. H. Stage Road Chapel, 4445 Stage Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38128. A burial will occur Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Road, Memphis, TN 38125.
