Ludine Rickman Carlisle, age 98, of Memphis, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. Ludine was born in Shiloh, Tennessee on October 4, 1924 to the late Fred D. and Pearl Rickman. In 1943 she graduated from Mitchie High School in Shiloh, TN and came to Memphis, TN to work in an airplane factory riveting airplane wings. When the Nurse Cadet Corp was established, she entered Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital, for some of the most enjoyable years of her life, where she earned her certificate as a Registered Nurse in 1947. There she learned the deep meaning of care and compassion for the sick and disabled. Ludine fell deeply in love with Vernon Hugh Carlisle in 1947. Their starry-eyed love was noticed by everyone who saw them. She would still say “I’m getting married to Carlisle” up until her passing.
Ludine was a Nurse Cadet Corp from 1944 until 1949. Her name is listed on the memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. She started her career at Kennedy V.A. and continued to work as a R.N. for almost 60 years. She “retired” in 1991 after 38 years of service but worked double shifts as a private duty nurse for many years before retiring again.
While being a nurse was her passion, she was distinguished by her faith and her love for the Lord. Ludine was an avid student of God’s word, and she labored in prayer for her loved ones. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and was known to all as Mamaw. Mamaw loved her family deeply. Her door was always open, and she cherished being surrounded by her family in her home where she lived for the past 65 years. Mamaw aways said that our family had love and that was all that mattered. Even in her dying days she repeatedly said she was rich because of her family.
Ludine is survived by her children, Karen Carlisle Chism (Randall) of Germantown, TN, Vernon Hugh Carlisle, Jr. (Barbara) of Shiloh, TN and Dawn Carlisle Cahan of Memphis, TN; her grandchildren, Lance R. Chism of Memphis, TN, Jeff Pope (Anna) of New Orleans, LA, Corey Chism Gallina (John) of Collierville, TN, Jamie Hatchett McGhee (Brian) of Bartlett, TN, Melanie Hatchett Bradley of Memphis, TN, Lisa Hatchett Brown (Steve) of Memphis, TN, Sam Hatchett of Memphis, TN, Jennifer Petro Jurado (Juan) of Memphis, TN, Holly Carlisle Maness (Michael) of Shiloh, TN, and Matt Carlisle (Melody) of Memphis, TN; her great-grandchildren, Hayden Bradley, Ava Grace Bradley, Jack Gallina, Rob Gallina, Noah Maness, Jackson Maness, Sam Brown, Jacob Brown, Declan McGhee, Ronan McGhee, Simone Jurado, and Xavi Jurado; and her brother, Arnold Rickman of Tuscumbia, AL. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Vernon Hugh Carlisle; her daughter, Cherie Carlisle Hatchett of Memphis, TN; her parents, Fred D. and Pearl Rickman of Shiloh, TN; her sisters, Mildred Kimbrough of Tuscumbia, AL, Ona Ruth Dixon of Tamaqua, PA, Dorothy Smith of Shiloh, TN, and Maxine Grisham of Memphis, TN; and her brothers, C.G. Rickman of Chicago, IL and Fred Rickman, Jr. of Shiloh, TN.
