After spending her early childhood in Henderson, Tennessee, Shirley moved with her family to Memphis, Tennessee where she graduated from LC Humes High School and earned the BS and MED degrees from what was then Memphis State College.
Shirley retired in 1983 from the Memphis City School System after 30 years serving as teacher/librarian on the faculties of Berclair Elementary School, Colonial Junior High School and East High School.

As an adult, she enjoyed being a member of the Memphis Symphony chorus, and the Sarabeth Causey Choral. After retirement, she taught first grade Sunday school at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and volunteered as a teachers assistant in the day school there for several years.
Shirley is survived by her brothers: Bill Barber and his wife Nanette; Mark Barber and his wife Kathy; nephews, Brett Barber and his wife Selena; and Roger Barber; great nephews, Evan Barber and his wife, Emma; Andrew Barber, and his wife Sarah; and great-great nephews Mack Barber and Miles Barber; and great-great nieces Eleanor Barber and Blythe Barber.
