Wendell Walter Jewell Jr., known affectionately as Wally, Scooter, or Bing Bang, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024, in Memphis, Tennessee after a long battle with multiple health issues. Born on August 7, 1960, in Humboldt, TN, Wendell's life resonated with a beautiful blend of music and precious stones.
Wendell, a true gem in the rough, was a diamond specialist by profession—but his true passion was music. He was a talented award-winning songwriter and vocalist who also honed his skills as a musician and vocal coach. For a decade, he toured and recorded with the Southern Gospel quartet, "Call to Worship," sharing his gift of song with audiences far and wide. His love for music continued as he spent an additional ten plus years performing with his son's band, the "Trey Jewell Band," a Southern rock and country outfit. Wendell's songwriting talents were further recognized as he collaborated with Grammy-nominated industry greats. The Trey Jewell Band even had the privilege of opening for platinum-selling recording artists, showcasing Wendell's talents on a grander stage.
Described as sharp, witty, and a natural performer, Wendell always had a joke at the ready, keeping those around him entertained. When not creating musical harmony, he enjoyed hobbies like singing (of course!), cornhole, bowling, golf, racquetball, tennis, fishing, and traveling to find inspiration in new places. Wendell was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, where he found spiritual solace and community.
He also savored good food and good company, bringing laughter and joy to every gathering.
Wendell leaves behind an orchestra of loved ones: his devoted wife of 41 years, Lynn Jewell, son Trey Jewell (wife Erin), sisters Dru Huffaker (husband Mel) and Leigh Kersh (husband Steve), brother Kenneth Michael Goodrich (wife Ava), stepmother Neely Joyce Mehlin, and mother-in-law Martha "Gerry" Holliday. He also considered his best friend Toby Ehrler (wife Marie) to be his brother as the two shared such a close bond since childhood. He is preceded in death by his mother, Melba Ruth Crocker Jewell, father, Wendell Jewell Sr., and brother, Donald Wendell Jewell.
A visitation will be held for Wendell on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Colonial Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Family Funeral Care is assisting with arrangements.
Wendell's life was a symphony of joy, and though his melody may have faded, the chorus of his influence will resonate forever.
