September 13, 1927-November 20, 2011
Beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and Uncle, Asuncion was more commonly known as “Chon” to all who knew and loved him. He was born on September 13, 1927 in Riverside, California to immigrant parents: Mr. Macario Arroyo and Mrs. Rita Vera Arroyo. He is survived by his wife (his girlfriend) of almost 60 years, Mrs. Eva R. Arroyo. He is a beloved father to his only biological daughter, Dolores A. Martinez, and he is a beloved grandfather of Benjamin, Adrian, Erika and Diana Martinez. It should be noted that while he is survived by many others who consider themselves “adopted” children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of “Chon Arroyo.” Chon Arroyo was the youngest of three brothers; he is survived by his middle brother, Guadalupe “Pablo” Arroyo. In spite of him being the youngest of the three brothers, he held the role of family patriarch, and served as the parental figure to his brother’s children. Chon Arroyo worked from 1952 to 2000 with the Bianchi & Sons Packing Company in the company’s extensive tomato growing operations. Chon had an amazing work ethic which was unwavering even as he retired; he was an avid, yet unofficial “Master Gardener,” whose amazing green thumb can best be described as the Midas touch of gardening. If you stop by the Arroyo household, you will leave with an ample arm-full of “Chayote Squash” which is an abundant staple and sense of personal pride from his annual garden harvest. Chon Arroyo lived his life by the philosophy of charity, kindness and respect. No person who came to his door was ever turned-away or treated unkindly or not invited-in. He gave respect and kindness indiscriminately to all whom he came in contact with… This is why any person who came to know him, undoubtedly came to love him and appreciate him. Chon Arroyo lost his courageous fight against Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer, a most rare, invasive and incurable form of cancer, on Sunday, November 20th, 2011. To one and all who wish to come bid farewell to this amazing man, the Arroyo Family and its extended family members invite the community to bid “Chon” farewell at the Rosary and viewing for him at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home on Thursday, December 1st 2011. The viewing will begin at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the Stratford Evans Chapel located at 1490 B Street, Merced, CA 95341.
