Jean served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1974 in the AMS Squadron where he worked on B-52’s. He served in the Korean War and Vietnam War, where he was deployed to places such as Thailand and Guam. Jean retired from the Air Force as the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He then went on to work for Gallo Winery as a Safety Supervisor. After retiring from Gallo Winery, he and his wife traveled periodically throughout the United States in their beloved motorhome visiting National Parks, family, and friends alike. Jean’s other hobbies besides traveling included going to estate sales to find little treasures and tinkering on his cars and anything he could fix, including his cherished red 1940 Buick Sedan. Just like his beloved cars, there wasn’t anyone he wouldn’t help.
Jean is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Louise Fones, along with his sister Elsa Mae Hodges.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Carol Fones, his two children Gregg (Gina) Fones, Lisa (Kevin) Chagnon, his grandchildren Jared, Connor, and Morgan Fones, Jenny Talbot, and great grandchildren, Ryan and Rowan Fones, and Bryce Talbot.
A Celebration of Life for Jean will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B Street, Merced, CA 95341.
