

Walter Thomas Lopes passed away on August 9, 2016 at the age of 85 at home with his family by his side. He’s survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Augie Lopes; sons, Thomas Lopes of Roseville, California and David Lopes of Merced; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Walter served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. He was an accomplished architect who had his own firm in Sacramento, California for 18 years specializing in public buildings. He later took on a job for Merced County as Deputy Director of Public Works. He became president of Calbo after years as a member, treasurer and Vice President. Walter gave 23 years as a scout leader in the B.S.A. receiving high honors. He also was a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus and held advisory positions with Merced County’s Restoration, Redevelopment and Retirement Committees. He was actively involved in teaching and instruction on Hunter Safety classes.
Walter loved serving his community and church. He had a great appreciation for nature and outdoors and enjoyed hunting and travel. He was a generous, gracious man who loved his family and friends.
A rosary with funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 9:30A.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church located at 671 East Yosemite Ave in Merced, burial will immediately follow services at Merced District Cemetery located at 1300 B Street.
