Arthur George Spong peacefully left this world surrounded by his family on April 20, 2025. He is
survived by his wife Betsy; son David Allen (Brandy) and daughter Leigh Sims (Charlie);
grandchildren Brandon Lenwai, Sarah Rifa (Alex), Noah Lenwai (Nishaly), Nathan Lenwai,
William Allen, Emma Allen, and Nicholas Sims; seven great grandchildren; sister Alice Spong;
extended family; and a legion of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and
Katherine, and brothers, Alfred and James.
To many, Art will be remembered as one of the last true car guys. A lifer at General Motors, Art
retired in 2014 after 46 years with the company. He was truly an encyclopedia of the Corvette
and could tell you anything and everything about the how and why of the first seven generations
of the car.
He was also a master tinkerer, never letting things be, always convinced he could make it better,
bigger, faster. If there wasn't a part or a piece or a tool readily available for whatever project, he
would make one. And believe us when we say, he always had at least two projects going on.
To his family, we will remember him as Dad and Grandpa. He was most proud of his kids and
grandkids. You could always tell when he had a plan with the grandkids, because there was a
twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin.
Over the course of their 26 year marriage, Art and Betsy had a life of love and never ending
adventure, having visited almost every continent via cruise ship in their retirement. From the top
of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, the fjords of Norway, St. Petersburg Russia, and the
olive farms of Italy, there was not much left for them to see and do.
Art was also the most selfless person you had ever met and would put everyone else's needs
ahead of his own. He spent most of his 74 years giving to others in any way he could, never
asking for anything in return. In fact, he struggled most when people wanted to do things for
him.
While the heavens gained another star, our world down here is a little bit dimmer.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida for their
exceptional care and guidance through this last journey.
