May 19, 1929 to May 4, 2016
George was born in Grass Valley, California and was raised in Sacramento, California. George joined the Army in 1950 and served in the Artillery during the Korean War. He also spent time in Japan. After 3 years in the Army, George owned a floor covering business, eventually opting to work for a large company which worked on the Sacramento State Capitol building. George actually met Governor Ronald Reagan while working there. George was President of his Craftsman Union for 26 years and received awards for training apprentices to better their skills. His first wife Nyla passed away. George retired in 1992 and met Shirley in March 1996, three months after she had retired from AT&T. They both belonged to a 45+ Dance Group which met weekly at the Holiday Inn. George would come over and mow her lawn, and she was impressed. They lived in Citrus Heights until moving to Leisure World in 2003. Leisure World was a perfect place since George was an avid golfer and even got Shirley to play. He was program chairman for the Computer Club for several years. They always enjoyed the LW dances together and formed many friendships. George was known as the “Tomato Man” and loved growing tasty vegetables he would share. George and Shirley began attending VIA Church in 2007 and continued faithfully, especially enjoying the Senior Activities. George was very healthy and active until illness took over in December 2008 with Valley Fever which included spinal meningitis. 2009 was a recovery year, but life has been at a slower pace since then. Leukemia and heart difficulties were the final culprits. George is survived by his wife Shirley, his sister Ella, his son John, four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held at VIA Church on Power and Adobe on Monday, May 23rd at 11:00 with lunch to follow.
