Jim's family moved often during his childhood, eventually settling in Topeka, Kansas. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Jayne, in 1957. Together they raised three children, Elizabeth (Penny), James III (Lynda), and Christopher (Jody). He is also survived by five grandchildren, James O. IV, Benjamin, Kaitlyn, Matthew and Zachary and one great-granddaughter, Dorothy. His family meant the world to him, and he cared for them in every way he could.
For most of his career, Jim was in retail. He worked for JC Penny's for over 20 years, culminating in 8 years as a unit manager. After taking early retirement, he opened his own store, "Scents and Such", in the old Cottonwood Mall in Holladay, Utah and ran it successfully for several years. Once he actually did retire, Jim and Jayne travelled extensively, eventually opting to become full-time RV'ers. Their travels led them to Mesa, AZ, where they finally put down roots, buying a home in the ViewPoint Golf Resort community in 2018.
The last few years were marked by Jim's love of being busy. Never one to spend much time socializing outside of the family, he dedicated himself to making sure everyone was okay and everything was "fixed". His techniques were his own, leading the family to refer to them as "Jimmy-rigging". But one way or another, he made sure that everything kept running. Earlier in life, Jim loved horseback riding and camping. Later, he shared with the family a love of fishing and boating at Lake Powell. In all, he lived a full and successful life.
A celebration of life for James will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a reception and appetizers from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
