

Larry Edward Hanna, 78, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2025 in Mesa, Arizona. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, to Lawrence Benjamin Hanna and Frieda Hulda Ida Dick, Larry grew up on the family farm near Lisbon, North Dakota, where he learned the values of hard work, integrity, and community that guided him throughout his life.
Larry enjoyed a distinguished 32-year career in banking, finance, and real estate, culminating in his role as President and CEO of First Community Credit Union in Jamestown ND, one of the leading credit unions in the country at the time. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a proud United States Army Vietnam Veteran, serving his country with honor from 1968 to 1969. He was a graduate of Lisbon High School and the North Dakota State School of Science and attended the University of North Dakota.
Throughout his life, Larry was deeply committed to service, actively participating in a wide array of fraternal and community organizations, including the VFW, Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, American Legion, Elks, Masonic Temple, El Zagal Shrine and Clown Unit, Kiwanis, Jaycees, and Moose Lodge. He valued friendship, fellowship, and community, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He cherished watching his grandsons play hockey, baseball, and football, loved fishing, hunting, and golfing, and had a lifelong affection for the Black Hills of South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lawrence and Frieda Hanna; three brothers, Carroll (Gladys) Hanna, George (Julie) Hanna, William (Susan) Hanna, and his sister, Coleen. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Cowles; three sons, Todd (Heather) of Billings MT, Mark (Becky) of Rochester IL, Aaron (Ruby) of Billings MT, and their beloved mother, Patricia Hanna; four stepsons, Russell (Cassie) of Omaha NE, Bryan of Palm Springs CA, David of Malone NY, and Martis (Claire) of Chapel Hill NC; grandsons Jack, Walker, and Caden; nieces and nephews Kristi (Jeff) Johnson, Kari Hanna, Betsy Hanna, Scott Hanna, Jeff Hanna; and many other family members and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Fountain of the Sun Retirement Community, 8001 E Broadway Rd, Mesa, AZ, at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 17th, 2025 at the Veterans Memorial Fountain, with a reception following at the Poolside room. A Celebration of Life will take place at Kirk Funeral Home, 1051 E. Minnesota Street, Rapid City, SD, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, followed by interment at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Drive, Sturgis, SD, at 11:00 a.m. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the Moose Lodge 1137, 841 E. Saint Patrick Street, Rapid City, SD, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests Memorial contributions be made in Larry’s name to the Moose Lodge 1137, Rapid City, SD 57701 for the building fund.
