Mike was born on March 22, 1973. He grew up in Tempe and was a proud graduate of the class of 1991 from McClintock High School, where he excelled in sports. Mike attended college at Northern Arizona University and received his degree in 1996, but was also an avid fan of the Arizona State University Sun Devils.
Mike met the love of his life, Cindy, after college. They were married on July 10, 1999. Mike and Cindy raised their family in Mike’s childhood home. His children, who followed in his footsteps, are also both proud McClintock Chargers.
Mike was a quiet leader who showed the way to live and love. He soaked up every minute of life with his family and his friends, who he treated as family. Even when not easily recognized in his motorcycle helmet, it was easy to spot him on his Harley with the license plate of “HORN1.” His big personality was always shining when he was sharing vacations with friends or when he was sharing his mastery of backyard entertaining. He had a way of making people smile, usually in response to his own bearded smile and big laugh.
Mike’s love was infectious and is evident in his children, Casey and Allison. Their zeal for life reflects their father’s love for them, family, and friends. Mike’s friends were so drawn to him that Casey and Allison refer to some as “uncle.” Casey’s reflection of his father makes him a natural magnet for friends at Purdue University, where he and his 7 dorm mates went viral with their “8 Dudes, 1 Dorm” reality story. Allison is also showing the way to live and love as an international exchange student with the Tempe Sister Cities program, making friends from all over the world. Mike’s love as a father was truly remarkable and left an indelible legacy.
Mike’s legacy also touched the Horns’ community. He spent his career with McCarthy Building Companies, where he focused on serving the educational community. Mike’s fingerprints are all over the southwestern United States where he oversaw the construction of schools. His passion for education led him to become a member of the Tempe Diablos, where he focused on supporting education through the Diablos’ scholarships programs and promoting the annual Excellence in Education event, which he chaired in 2024, where outstanding teachers are recognized by their peers and community. Mike’s colleagues at McCarthy were equally touched by his passion and McCarthy became the lead annual sponsor of the Excellence in Education event. Mike’s love and his passions will endure in the hearts of so many that he inspired and continues to inspire.

Evergreen Road in Tempe, Arizona, for services to celebrate and remember their husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Mike.
