Paul was born in Oak Park Hospital and grew up in Melrose Park, IL. He was drafted into the Army, 2nd armor division, in 1963. He served 2 years. When he got out of the army he started working for the Chicago Board of Education. He started as a janitor. Worked his way to becoming a fireman and from there he worked his way up to becoming a grade 5 building engineer. He went to school and received a plant engineering license. After 38 years working for the Board of Education, he retired.
After retiring he found the love for gardening. He built raised garden beds in our backyard. Some of the produce he grew were radishes, lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes and more. He went to the shooting range once a week with his brother Jon and other friends. Met once a month for lunch with other retired Board of Ed engineers. He loved walking the dogs throughout the neighborhoods we lived in. He also got into yoga with the park district. Once the classes were over, he religiously did the exercises at home and even when we went on vacations.
He was a man of faith all his life. However, in 2015 he started a faith journey with a group from Idaho called Seekers of Yahweh Ministries. This propelled him into diving deeper into scripture and his studies. His walk with Yahweh became stronger.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie (Gorka) Matson, his brother-in-law Mark Gorka; his children; Paula Matson Sullivan and son Joseph Matson; his cherished grandson, Andrew Sullivan; his brothers Jon Matson and wife Susan, Cliff Matson and wife Maureen, Roy Matson and wife Ling and his sister Gail (Tryner) Matson. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Matson, Charles Matson, and Ronald Matson and parents Stanley Matson and June (Biedron) Matson.
He is survived by our 4-year-old Cavapoo, Coffee. He was preceded in death by our 3 dogs, Peanuts, Max, and Keko.
Paul was a great husband and friend. He was a jack of all trades and made a great handyman during our 43 years of marriage. Paul loved his family, friends and talking with people. No matter where we were he always found someone to strike a conversation with. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
He wants everyone to know who are mourning and missing him that he is happy and pain free in the arms of our heavenly Father, Yahweh, who called him home.
