

Wayne E. Lien, 86, of Mesa, AZ passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from natural causes. Born in Scobey, MT on January 12, 1926, he joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16. His ship was part of a convoy in the invasion of Okinawa. He was later drafted into the Army and served as Gunnery in the Korean War. Following the war, he returned to the Merchant Marine, where he worked his way up to the rating of Captain and in 1971 became the master of his first ship, the S.S. American Ship, a 605 foot cargo ship. He retired from American President Lines, after a long career that included travel throughout the world. He moved with his family to Fountain Hills, AZ in 1979, where he was an active member of the Fountain Hills Kiwanis. Lien is survived by his wife Eileen, who lives in Mesa, AZ and children Jack W. Lien of Olympia, WA, Tammy Lien-Dronberger of Annapolis, MD, Wayne R. Lien of Mesa, AZ and Jay V. Lien of Brooklyn, NY. Additionally he is survived by three sisters Beatrice, Ginger and Patricia as well as seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A funeral will be at 4:00 pm a gathering one hour prior, Friday, December 21, 2012 at Mariposa Gardens Cemetery Chapel, 6747 E. Broadway Rd in Mesa.
