David was born on July 2, 1942, in Henryetta, Oklahoma to Ted and Verna Sloan. David grew up in Oklahoma and had two elder siblings, his big brother, Bob, and his loving sister, Joanne. David loved his family and was very fond of his older brother and sister, and they often called him by his nickname, Rusty. As a kid, he attempted to give himself a tattoo to memorialize the moniker, but decided to leave it at “R”.
He traveled to many different states, but returned to Oklahoma, where he met his future wife, Karen “Keenie” Gautney, in the Gautney family bakery. The two of them married and had three children, Tammy Joanne, Tina Marie, and James David. Family was important to David as evidenced by his close relationships with his nieces and nephews, Brenda Lee, Kim, Steve, Kelly, Mark David, and Julie.
David worked for Oroweat bakery for 25 years maintaining the factory machines and often took his son, Jim-Bob, to tour the factory. He also proudly escorted his daughter, Tina, across Memorial Stadium, as Homecoming Queen. And, his first born, Tammy, was named after his beloved sister, and was the only one in the family to share his crystal blue eyes. Throughout his life, David was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, rain or shine. It was best to not call him when the Cowboys were playing.
David was preceded in death by his parents; the mother of his children, Karen; his daughter, Tammy; his brother, Bob; his sister, Joanne; and his niece, Brenda Lee.
David is survived by his daughter, Tina, and her husband, Peter, and by his son James, and his husband, Murray. David is also survived by his grandchildren: Jesse, Jana, Amy, Jemma and Georgia Lee; his great-grandchildren: Tristan, Alexis, Kingston, Elijah, and Willow; his nieces and nephews: Steve, Mark David, Kim, Kelly, Julie, and their loving families.
Sweet David Lee is now in Heaven, reuniting with family members he’s missed for a long time. He’s probably making a pot of beans and getting ready to watch a game with them from the best seats in the sky.
