Alton James “Cotton” Olinde entered eternal rest on November 8, 2013, age 78. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A native of New Roads and a resident of Bridge City and Kenner, Louisiana, he was the beloved husband of Jacqueline Olinde, father of Craig, James Jr., and Patrick Olinde, Misti Wall (husband Rory) and Tracy Yeager (husband Edwin), and stepfather of Yvonne Murphy (husband Michael). He is survived by 12 grandchildren, 9 great-granchildren, brother Lawrence Olinde (wife Olive) and Wilfred Olinde Jr. (wife Debra). He was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Langlois Taylor and Wilfred Olinde.
He served in the Army in the Korean War as part of the Rakkasans and was a past Commander of Metry Post 6640 of the V.F.W., past District II Commander of the V.F.W., past Grand Commander of the Military Order of the Cootie, past Seam Squirrel Mud Bugs Pup Tent #3, past 6th District Quartermaster of the M.O.C., and President of the Metry Veterans Association. He also held many state chairmanships for the V.F.W. Formerly featured in Hot Rod Magazine as a mechanic on the 1961 National Championship Car Craft Best Appearing Dragster, he was an avid Nascar enthusiast.
Services will be held on Wednesday November 13, 2013 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., Metairie. Visitation for family will take place from 9:00am until 10:00am , visitation for friends from 10:00am until time of service. A V.F.W. service will begin at 11:00 am followed by a Mass at 1:00pm. Family, friends, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary, members of the Military Order of the Cootie and its Ladies Auxiliary, and members of the Republican Women of Jefferson Parish are invited to attend.
