

Chester E. “Chuck” Sagers passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 10, 2011 at home. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Doris L. Sagers, his daughter, Kathleen M. Sagers and his son, the late John E. Sagers He had 2 sister-in-laws, Myrtle Muller and the late Lulabel Melancon and a brother-in-law, Fred Landry. He was preceded by his parents, Woodrow Wilson and Carly Viney Sagers and his 3 brothers, Hubert Harold Sagers, John E. Sagers and Samuel J. Sagers. He had 6 nieces, Cindy Melancon, Jeanie LeClere, Nicole Cosola, Angie Kadesky, Dawn Shea and Melanie Smith, 5 nephews, Samuel J. Sagers, Jr., George Melancon, Jr., Daniel Melancon, Ronald Melancon and the late Stephen W. Sagers. He also had numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins. He is survived by his best friend, Andrew P. Caneza. He also had 2 grand God sons, Aiden Michael Roof and Nolan Randolph Young, 6 stand-in grand children, Lauren and Matthew Labatut and Ian, Colin, Duncan and Nolan Young. He also had 2 grand dogs, Elway Sagers and Jacomo Labatut. He was born in Robertsdale, AL on August 26, 1935. He moved to New Orleans when he was 7 and attended Luscher School where he acquired an extreme dislike for Tulane and in turn became a huge LSU fan. He also attended Warren Easton High School. He was in the US Coast Guard for 10 years, at one point serving on the USCGC Mendota. He worked at the Times-Picayune and for Spice World for 39 years as a general manager until retiring in 2004. He was 76.
He was also a huge Saints fan. He not only loved Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, but he also was very good at it. He was the self-proclaimed king of one-liners. He was also a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore, AL. He was a parishioner as well as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Ann’s Church and belonged to the Men’s Club. He belonged to the American Legion Post, 0350 and was a 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus, Council 4663. He helped with many fundraisers, but was most proud of the work he did for St. Michael’s Special School.
Services will be held at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Dr, Metairie, LA 70001 on Friday, October 14, 2011. Visitation begins at 11:30 am with a mass and internment to follow at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Michael’s Special School in New Orleans, LA.
