Dear Roberta, Michael and Family - it has been over 30 years since meeting you all during a most impacftul year in Tulsa. When Terry Schell called to tell me the news about Dave, I was saddended and at the same time memories came flooding back.  At that time Michael was a "chip off the block" (maybe still?).  I appreciated Dave's friendship and knowing you all. Based on the pictures, lots of living has taken place since - I am glad you had all that.

I will remember Dave best as the man who always had a ready smile, great sense of humor and whose knowledge was priceless. There was usually a twinkle in his eye and great care for those around him.  It was a joy to work with him in those days when he, Roberta, Kathleen and I worked together at the Kansas City Convention Center.   He will be missed by many and I was blessed to call him my friend.

I've always remembered Dave with a smile on his face; the type of smile that sometimes made we wonder if he about to laugh with me or at me; then, he would wink and give me a hug. I know I'm a better person having know him. The last time we spent time together, it was as if the many years since I had last seen him before had just melted away. Michael, you are so lucky to have had such a loving father; always remember the great man that he and your mother raised - in the same vein and image as your father. I was so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. You and your family are in my prayers . . .

Most of us have memories that seem silly and insignificant to others.  Those memories have a way of bringing back certain feelings and other memories for those of us who hold them.  These feelings and memories are the ones that NEVER leave our mental scrap book.  Some memories come back after someone reminds you of details.  Those would be the ones that make you say "Oh yeah! Now I remember that."  I'm so very glad to say that my memories are the mental scrap book kind.  It doesn't matter how many years have gone by, they're vivid.  My parents would stay up half the night playing "Risk" with Dave and Roberta while they enjoyed the peace and quiet that Michael and I FINALLY gave them after hours of running with Frosty the dog up and down the hallway.  My parents and I stayed at the Martin house in Tulsa one Christmas.  They gave me a GORGEOUS doll that I still have to this day.  Along with that doll was a baby doll crib.  What did I see in one of these pictures?  Dave putting it together.  Although the crib is long gone, the doll is not!  33 years later, she's safe and sound.  I just had her out of the box about 2 months ago.  I don't know about recently, but in his younger years, Dave was nuts!  A few years prior to Tulsa, Dave and my dad (along with Buddy Surber) built a snowman in my front yard in Maryland. You would think that the two kids (Michael and I) would have had the most fun in the snow.  NOPE!  It was the grown ups!  And you guessed it.  Dave was pretty much the ring leader.  That night was one of the FEW times I ever REALLY saw my dad cut loose and have some good ol' fashioned fun.  As silly as that sounds, my dad would have NEVER been out playing in the snow if it hadn't been for Dave.  Well, after all those nights of Dave, Roberta and my parents staying up late to play "Risk" and "Aggravation", I actually kept the SAME "Risk" game that my parents owned because of the memories attached to it from growing up with the Martins.  From Michael and I riding in the blue Suburban that Dave drove for a while in the 70's to the days of all of us living in Tulsa.  The memories are as vivid as the memories I have of my "biological" family.  Even though it's been years since I've seen Dave and Roberta, the Martins have always been family in spite of years and miles.  Since I'm not sure I can make it to Louisiana in time, Mike gave me a wonderful idea.  Since I learned the Lord's Prayer from Roberta, I will be stopping for a moment Thursday evening to recite the Lord's Prayer in honor of all the wonderful memories I have of time spent with the Martins.  With much love and sadness, I will be with you in spirit on Thursday.  ............... Carissa

The reason why i can say that is because evey time i think about what you told me you are doing for his funeral i smile instead of crying. Thanks to dad i do know that he is in a better place and not in pain anymore,and a thanks to grandma you have made it a lot better to think about when you told me not to think of it as moring over his death.
