Elvina Vivien DiBartolo, 77, a lifelong resident of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of December 26, 2025. Elvina was born on July 6, 1948 in New Orleans to Elvina Cure and Roland P. Vivien. She attended school at St. Catherine of Sienna, and was in the first graduating class of Archbishop Chapelle High School. She then attended Loyola University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and later her Master’s Degree in Mathematics. In 1970, Elvina married her husband, Vincent Joseph DiBartolo. They began their marriage traveling while Vincent served in the Air Force, living in Turkey, Spain, and California. While in Spain, Elvina was a substitute teacher. When they returned home, they started their family, and in 1978, Elvina began her career at Archbishop Chapelle High School. She taught many subjects over her 20 years at Chapelle, but most Chipmunks remember her for her mathematics and civics classes. Elvina, was known as “Mrs. Di” to everyone. She was a mentor and leader, who held many educational positions including department head, curriculum coordinator, and alumna director. When she left Chapelle in 1998, she became an administrator and teacher at Our Lady of Divine Providence School, where she spent the next 20 years of her career. Elvina became the heart and soul of OLDP School, serving her “Christian Family” as principal until 2019. At OLDP School, she created multiple programs, events, and annual celebrations. She retired from the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 2020 with over 40 years of service. Elvina still continued to tutor students in math until her final days. She was a true educator, who identified and loved being Mrs. Di to the countless people that knew her.
Elvina’s faith in God helped her through many obstacles in her life, and made her the amazing woman everyone knew. After God, Elvina’s family was the most important thing in the world to her. She was always available to listen, give advice, laugh, and share stories. She was passionate about helping anyone in whatever way she could. Elvina was a loyal and true friend to so many. She was a selfless person, who always put everyone else first.
Elvina loved many things, most of all, the Christmas holidays. Poetry, philosophy, music, and journaling were her therapy. Spending time with her family and friends, being close to the water, and caring for the multiple dogs she loved throughout her life, always brought her joy and peace. But one of Elvina’s favorite things to do, was to engage in meaningful, intellectual conversations. You could ask her to explain psychology, theology, or the Fibonacci Sequence, and she would just “light up” with excitement!
Elvina is preceded in death by her parents, Elvina Cure and Roland Vivien; her sisters, Betty Warren and Phyllis Bowers; her niece, Gayle Boehm, and her nephew, Dewey Owsley.
Elvina is survived by her husband, Vincent DiBartolo; her daughters, Elvina DiBartolo Sortina, Ronica DiBartolo, and Gabrielle DiBartolo; her sons-in-laws, Rodney Sortina and Cas DiBartolo; and her granddaughter, Karley Diamond.
Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Divine Providence Church in Metairie, Louisiana on Monday, January 5, 2026. The visitation will be from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, with a Mass following. Interment will be reserved for family only.
