Eric Trujillo, a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from aggressive cancer at the age of 77. His world-class intelligence and wit were intact until his final moments, and he spent his last day talking and laughing with family and friends. He was not in pain, and he spent his final moments holding his son’s and nephew’s hands.
Eric grew up in Napoleonville and went on to lead a fascinating life. He attended school in Mexico before completing his college education at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA. He traveled the world and made friends in countless places. Eric spoke four languages – English, Spanish, French, and Hebrew. He wrote four non-fiction novels that are entertaining, but they also explore themes related to his commitment to justice, a value he inherited from his father and passed on to his son. His books include Joy Boy, Skin Deep, D.O.A., and Skin Deep Vol. 2. He had a deep love for dogs and owned ten standard poodles throughout his lifetime. He volunteered his time to canine rescue initiatives. Eric was also a published photographer. He loved to read, and he saw literature as a tool for pleasure and liberation. He had an impressive library, and he loved gifting books to his grandnieces, Kylie and Kennedy Truehill.
Eric’s greatest gift was how he made people feel. Eric never hesitated to help those in need, and he was a fiercely loyal and devoted friend. He worked as a social worker in Illinois for many years, during which time he helped countless people. Several of the people and families he had helped called to say thank you during Eric’s last day.
Eric’s life’s joy was raising his son, Jared. As a single parent, Eric embodied the tenderness of his mother and the firmness of his father. Jared is a civil rights attorney and law professor living in New York City. He loved his father deeply, and he is deeply grateful that he was by his side as he passed away.
Eric is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rev. Percy Truehill, and Sammy Lee Truehill. Eric left behind his son Jared Trujillo, siblings Iris Tatman, Joseph Trujillo, and Rodney Truehill, nephews Andy and RaShaan (Rena), grandnieces Kylie and Kennedy, and countless cousins and friends. His memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 12:30 PM at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM.
His ashes will be placed in a glass niche in Resthaven Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Baton Rouge, LA.
