Hazel Daigle Hurst

Hazel Daigle Hurst of Metairie, LA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 5, 2023 at the age of 94. She was born in Madisonville, LA on March 3, 1928 to Alcidie and Jean Baptiste Daigle, the sixth of seven children. She was a lifelong resident of the New Orleans area, which included living in the French Quarter in the 1930’s and 1940’s where she attended church at the St. Louis Cathedral.

She is survived by her loving children, John Hurst Jr., Pam Hall, George Hurst, Kevin Hurst, and Eric Hurst, her sister, Josephine Bennett, 13 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 30 years, John W. Hurst Sr. in 1980 and their son, James in 2006.

After her beloved husband passed away, she worked as a social worker at a local nursing home in New Orleans East. She was a great wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. Her famous oyster dressing and sweet smile will be dearly missed.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at St. Christopher The Martyr Catholic Church, 3924 Derbigny St. Metairie, LA . Visitation will be held from 10 AM – 11 AM with a memorial Mass to begin at 11 AM. A private graveside ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2023 in Greensburg, LA to honor her last wish of having her ashes placed at her husband’s grave.

Hazel spent her last 15 years living (initially along with her sister Inez) in Metairie Manor, which is a Christopher Homes senior living facility managed and funded be the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel's memory to: www.christopherhomes.org/donations
