Joseph served his country as a sailor in the capacity of Radio Officer in the United States Navy during World War II, and in the Merchant Marine as a Radio Officer during Vietnam. He was an avid fisherman who knew where the fishing was good, an ace car mechanic specializing in Volkswagens, and could repair anything electronic or mechanical. He was a most loving and caring father (Dad, Pop), grandfather (Grampy), and friend (Joe, Buddy, Battler) to everyone in his life, and was first in class in every endeavor he set his mind to.
