Louis Joseph Champagne, III passed away peacefully on April 10, 2024 at the age of 67. He was born in New Orleans on October 30, 1956. The oldest of 4 children, he attended Mater Dolorosa Grammer School and grew up playing at Carrollton Playground. He was a 1974 graduate of De La Salle High School where he played baseball and was in the drama club. He threw papers with this dad and brothers as a teen and attended the University of New Orleans where he graduated with a degree in accounting and went to work for J. Earl Pedelahore & Co. Accountants for 10 years.
Survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda Foret Champagne, his mother, Mary Ann Link Champagne, his sisters, Dianne Champagne, Dorinda Beaumont, and Lynne Champagne, his children, Melissa Sbisa (Eddie) and Brooke Champagne (Danie), and his grandchildren, Kaleigh Powell Landauer (Brittany), Amber Sbisa, Paxtyn Champagne, and Emily Sbisa.
Preceded in death by his father, Louis J. Champagne, Jr., his brothers, Paul A. Champagne and Jay M. Champagne, his son, James H. Powell, Jr., his cousin, Lenny Childs, as well as his grandparents, several aunts, and uncles.
Athletics have always been a large part of his life. He worked for the past 30 years at Grundmann’s Athletic Company. While his primary duties were in the accounting department, you could often find him in the showroom fitting kids in shoulder pads and helmets for football season.
In his early adult years, he enjoyed playing basketball, softball and bowling. As time went on, you could find him in other aspects of athletics. He could often be found watching his sisters play softball, coaching his children, and cheering on the sidelines for his children and grandchildren playing ball, and has attended his fair share of dance revues also. He enjoyed puzzles, such as crosswords and sudoku, riddles, reading the comics, and had impeccable joke delivery skills. He was full of random and interesting facts and was an excellent conversationalist. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 10 AM – 1 PM with a prayer service to begin at 1 PM. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Terrytown, LA.
