Oh, Donna, I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of your mama. I remember her as being a great mom and she was always very kind to me. I know and understand your pain and I will pray for you. I pray that the Holy Spirit fills you with His comforting and healing grace. Try to take comfort in knowing that she is in a better place and reunited with her baby boy. I know you will miss her very much but you will see each other again, this I know.

The first memory is joy
    regardless of the distance or circumstance
        I was family
Her home was a haven of welcome
    a stronghold of warmth that always displaced its footage
        the more people under her roof,
              the farther the walls became
Her family was her anchor
    her home, her ship
         and she the effortless captain 
               commanding without word, that any sin or argument be abandoned while in her domain
She was kindness that unified 
     a matriarchal light to spawn and stranger alike
         an open door with Christmas lights welcoming you home


The next memory is matchbooks in a bowl
    beneath an unused aquarium
        (but I might be getting that wrong do to my youth then)
It's the matches that I remember though
    an impossible random amount for any one person to collect
Once those that knew her found out
    they delivered her collection to her
        each match a small bit of love that added up to a fortress of unburnt fire
            I never had to see the light
               to know it was there
I regret having never added to the bowl
     but where is a six year old going to get matches


The final memory is of cooking for her for the first and last time
    her children and grandchildren present
        nothing surrounding her but happiness
It was a perfect shining rarest of days
     laughter and barbeque and love all around
I could see her gladness as she witnessed the full production of her life 
     gathered once again in joy
It was a day meant to happen
     an iron memory for these future words to honor her life
           a day where the world was left outside
     and all that was good was before her to enjoy
She knew, more than any of us, what kind of day it was
     and she took notice
         she watched the life around her with the satisfaction of age 
                  her job done well and finished
    nothing to do but enjoy the joy that she had wrought
Her smile that day spoke of satisfaction
     it was burned on my mind and sits there today
          letting the words come


With watery eyes I say goodbye to my last matriarch
     but with happiness she wanders from us
         to the next adventure with God and stars
I wish her speed and wonder
     I wish her love and warmth
          I wish her the fire and light she gave all of us
               and I wish her immortality in those she leaves behind
Her matchlight burns still
      though the book be finished

Donna and family: What a beautiful woman! I can tell from the photos that your mother was intelligent, witty, and full of love and life. I see where you get your joie de vivre. Celebrate the years you had together. She will live in your hearts.

My granny was the best granny! Whether it was watching chick flicks, shooting Jager, or complaining about my parents- she was always who I needed her to be. And now she's an angel! :) Love you BB!!!

Donna, Debbie and Family, I know your hearts are heavy, but your Mother had a wonderful life.  I see such happiness in her eyes in every picture.  What a beautiful family, a living legacy of a wonderful loving Mother.

Marcelle was the glue that made First Metropolitan work so well. She was loved and admired by all of us at the Bank. I am sorry I won't be able to pay my respects this Friday. I am committed to do some volunteer work, so I will do it in her memory and honor.. Paul Bonitatibus

To The Berni Family, So sorry for the loss of your mom and granny.  She was a lovely lady and always had kind words to share.  She was also a great cook and loved to feed everyone. Rather you where hungry or not, she made sure everyone had plenty to eat, always!! We will always remember her especially during the holidays when we make her famous oyster dressing.
