Mary Edith Sweeney Hill was born April 20, 1927 in Paducah, Texas to J.T. Sweeney and Dora Mae Bottoms Sweeney. She was one of eight children in the Sweeney clan. Mary met her devoted and loving husband, Raymond D. Hill in Paducah, Texas and were married on April 26, 1947. Mary and Raymond had three children; Donnie Lynn Hill (stillborn), Helen, and Malia. Mary and Raymond worked in Texas for a number of years, moved to Venezuela for Raymond’s job in oil and gas and eventually settled in south Louisiana.
Mary liked to tell people she was a cheerleader and ball player growing up in Texas. She earned her business degree and eventually became a bank officer for the American bank in Houma, La. She was a member of the American business Women’s Club in Houma, and received the honor of being Woman of the Year. She volunteered yearly for an organization called “Team Spirit” which sponsored a camp to support and encourage teens in the community. Mary also was a Co-founder of the Les Amies De Burkwall a group founded in 1984 that was committed to family and community help. After she retired from banking, she became an Election Commissioner in Terrebonne Parish. Mary had many other interests, she wrote an article monthly for the Houma Courier, she was a supporter and regular attendee of the Little Theater in Houma, she loved gardening, flower arranging and taking care of her many fruit trees.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Raymond who passed away on May 10,1999. She is also preceded in death by brothers, Walter, James, and Everett Sweeney, and sisters, Lynne S. Hobbs, Minnie S. Havens, Edna Ruth S. Futch and Mildred S. Mayberry.
She is survived by her daughters, Helen H. Adams of Slidell, La. and Malia H. LeBon (Brian) of Metairie, La. She was incredibly proud of her 7 wonderful grandchildren, Jennifer Mayfield (Michael), Julie T Lee, Jacob P. Bella, Brian G. LeBon, Jr. (Emily), Parker D. LeBon (Alison), Conner L. LeBon (Staci), and Taylor M. LeBon (Elizabeth).
She was blessed with 7 great-grandchildren as well; Destiny Lee, Brennan Lee, Ashley Lee, Amelia Mayfield, Jackson Daniel Bella, Bowen LeBon and Avery LeBon.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sandra H. Young, who she considered to be her third daughter and best friend. In addition, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
A small gathering will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd. in Metairie today, April 8th from 4-6:00 P.M. for family and close personal friends.
Mary will be buried alongside her husband and son in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah, Texas. We will have a graveside service on Saturday, April 9, 2021 at 12:00 noon.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Bridge House / Grace House or the American Cancer Association.
