Robert Joseph Martin, age 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Martin and Margaret Curran Martin. He is survived by his loving wife, Lessie Nixon Martin, to whom he was married for 67 years. He was blessed with five devoted children: Robert Hingle Martin, Lynne M. Smock, Linda M. Gibbs (Raymond), Elizabeth L. Martin, and Tammy M. Vanderbrook (Steve); 11 grandchildren: Tammi, Traci, and Tara’ Smock; Adam (Ashley Austin), Ashton (Kim), and Michael (Katie) Gibbs; Gina Cipriano-Pazo and Amanda C. Howe (James); and Melissa V. Beaugh and Stephen (Jessica) and Sean Vanderbrook. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Joyce Nixon, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bobby, as he was affectionately known, was a New Orleans native and Metairie resident most of his adult life. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School, served in the Louisiana National Guard, and retired from the New Orleans Fire Department having served for 30 years. Bobby was a kind, patient man and a devout Catholic. During their retirement years, he and Lessie enjoyed their morning walks at Lakeside Mall and could often be found at school fairs on weekends, enjoying the music and their Miller Lites (and in later years, O’Doul’s). Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at ST. ANGELA MERICI, 835 Melody Drive, Metairie, on Saturday morning, February 27, 2021 at 11:00.
