It is with great sadness that the Lopez family announces the passing of Ronald “Ronnie” John Lopez on Wednesday May 8, 2024 at the age of 80 due to complications from Lewy Body Dementia. Ronnie was born and raised in New Orleans and resided in Metairie. Son of the late Manuel D. Lopez, Sr. and Madeline Tortomasi Lopez, grandson of Valentina Alvarado Lopez, and nephew of Olga “Nanny” Lopez.
He is survived by his brother, Manuel D. Lopez (Garey), sister, Marilyn L. LeBlanc (James), and numerous nieces and nephews.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Vinet Lopez and they enjoyed 57 wonderful years together. Loving father of Timothy R. Lopez, Jeffrey M. Lopez and Lori L. McCluskey (Daniel). “Pop Pop” of 4 grandchildren, Mechela Cecile Lopez, Rylie Marie McCluskey, Brady Daniel McCluskey, and Beau Matthew McCluskey.
Ronnie graduated from Holy Cross High School and Loyola University where he received multi-sport scholarships, excelling in basketball and baseball while earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting. Ronnie worked for Freeport McMoran, Inc for 26 years as a controller and enjoyed being athletically active outside of work, playing on various work league teams. Ronnie was an avid runner completing marathons, which in his later years shifted into daily walking covering up to 6 miles. With his lifelong love for sports, Ronnie passed on his passion by taking his 2 sons to many New Orleans Jazz basketball games. He was an original season ticket holder of the New Orleans Pelicans and a diehard New Orleans Saints fan. As a member of Chateau Country Club, Ronnie enjoyed his bi-weekly golf games with his golf group.
Ronnie had an exceptional vocabulary, always reciting a multitude of proverbial sayings and aphorisms to his family. Attending Saturday vigil Mass, going to dinner with Jackie, working on crossword puzzles, and watching their favorite shows on the History Channel were routine. Ronnie was a true example of serving others with an unwavering faith in Jesus, serving as one of the lectors at the Lakeside Hospital Masses. He will be forever loved and remembered by his family and friends.
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
