

Shirley Deloris Simonds Smith, born on October 24, 1926 who grew up in New Orleans was a resident of Metairie for most of her life and Baton Rouge for the last three years at Sunrise at Siegen Assisted Living, at the age of 94, peacefully passed away at Hospice of Baton Rouge on Wednesday morning July 7, 2021. She is survived by her son, Vernon G. Smith and daughter-in-law Rebecca Carlin Smith. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason M. Lambert, married to Casey Lambert, and Jessica Smith. Great Grandchildren are Madison Ann Albers, Kaitlyn Lambert, Alex Lambert, Addy Liuzza and Brady Liuzza. Coming from a large family she is also survived by many nieces and nephews along with their children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse (JR.) Ray Smith, her father, Chester George Simonds, her mother, Annie Margaret Luce Simonds, her brother, Chester (Chic) Simonds and his wife Rita, her sisters, Annie Tompkins and her husband Gilbert, Dorothy (Dotty) Ferguson and her husband William L.(Dub), and Marion Goldate and her husband Salvadore Joseph (Junior); her husband’s sisters Hilda Warner and her husband Carl, Geraldine Ragusa and her husband Frank, Georgia Mae Bigelow and her husband Halbert (Buddy), and Betty Jim Shook and her husband Lee. Shirley and Jesse were members of the local Metairie AARP and loved participating in all the affiliated activities and partying with the many friends they made there. Growing up in New Orleans Shirley learned to be a fantastic cook. She loved fishing and crabbing and all the other great wonders of living in the most bountiful state in this great country. She loved traveling around this beautiful world we live in. And she and Jesse were very generous too by volunteering at nursing homes and numerous other charitable events. They lived life to the fullest and gave back as much as they could too. Shirley requested that her body be donated to The LSU Medical School, but due to Covid they are not taking anyone now. Her second request was to be cremated, which she was on July 9, 2021. Services will be held in Metairie on Friday, July 23rd., 2021 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home at 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Visitation at 2:00 to 3:00pm, Services from 3:00 to 3:30. She asked that in lieu of flowers please send donations to Veteran’s Tunnels to Towers and/or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
