Caridad "Carrie" M. Cuy, 85, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, in Coral Gables, FL, surrounded by her loving family. Born to Lina Bicierro and Domingo Montesa in the picturesque province of Romblon, Philippines, Carrie lived a life defined by devotion, love, and service.
Carrie graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the prestigious University of Santo Tomas in Manila. She worked as a licensed pharmacist until 1963 when she and her husband, Dr. Romulo T. G. Cuy, moved to the United States to build a new life together. Embracing her role as a full-time homemaker, she created a nurturing foundation for her family, later pursuing her calling in healthcare. Carrie earned her Nursing degree and served as a critical care nurse at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. Her career culminated as a respected surgical nurse specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery before retiring early in 2001 to her and Romulo’s dream home in Stewartsville, NJ.
Faith was the cornerstone of Carrie's life. A devoted Catholic, she actively participated in the Bukas Loob Sa Diyos (BLD) charismatic community, where she served in the Teaching Ministry for 15 years within the Archdioceses of Newark and Allentown. Upon moving to Stewartsville, she became an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alpha, NJ, contributing to both the choir and the cancer support group. In 2016, she was honored with a service award from the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, Diocese of Metuchen, in recognition of 15 years of dedication.
Carrie's interests extended far beyond her faith. She was a talented gardener, known for generously sharing her lovingly cultivated plants with family and friends. An avid reader, she delighted in lifelong learning and volunteering at the local library. She was also a gifted cook, admired for preparing elaborate, delicious meals and enthusiastically sharing her recipes.
Carrie is predeceased by her sister, Edith Tabora, and her brothers, Itong Montesa and Laureano (Larry) Montesa. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Romulo, and her sisters, Claudia (Claudie) Sison, Victorina (Vicky) Neri, and Estrellita (Lita) Base. She leaves behind her proudest legacy - her beloved children and grandchildren:
Dennis, an aerospace engineer, married to Sarah Danca, also an aerospace engineer, and their children, Kathryn and Aidan.
Romulo Jr., MD, a pediatric anesthesiologist, married to Omaida Velazquez, MD, a vascular surgeon, and their children, Peter (Jimmy) and Julia Caridad.
Kenneth, an electrical engineer, married to Julie Okon, MS, an artist and business owner, and their children, Brandon and Brian.
Janet, MS, a biomedical engineer, married to Jeff Anderl, PhD, also a biomedical engineer.
Carrie was a beacon of energy, generosity, and joy. Her vibrant presence and infectious laughter illuminated the lives of everyone she met. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
A visitation for Caridad will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025 from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135.
