Lucy Diaz

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lucy Diaz, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who departed this life on March 15, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on October 7, 1939, in Maripi, Boyacá, Colombia, to farming parents, Lucy was raised in a large, loving family as one of twelve siblings. Her birth name was Genoveva Lucila Moreno Mongui. At age seven, her family was forced to flee their rural home during La Violencia, a period of intense political unrest, relocating to Bogotá in search of safety and stability.

From these difficult beginnings, Lucy developed an unshakable resilience and strong work ethic. At just twelve, she began working in an undergarment factory to help support her family. During these early years in Bogota, Lucy met her future husband and lifelong love, Ivan Diaz. Their relationship would not only shape her personal life, but also her future path: with Ivan's support and encouragement, Lucy discovered and earned a full scholarship to become a teacher-an achievement that marked the beginning of her lifelong dedication to education and service.

Lucy began her career as a teacher in Bogotá. She and Ivan soon married and built a beautiful family together welcoming four children—Ana, Ivonne, Theophane, and Olga—while in Colombia. When their son, Theophane, was born with disabilities, Lucy and Ivan made the courageous decision to relocate their family to the United States in search of better medical treatment for him.

Arriving in the United States at age 29, Lucy embraced her new country with determination and hope. She and Ivan welcomed their fifth child, Judith, soon after arriving. They settled in Miami in the mid-1970s, where Lucy founded Lucy's Place, Inc. in 1984. She nurtured and grew the clothing alteration business for 40 years, building a loyal customer base and turning her shop into a beloved community space.

Lucy's home and Lucy's Place became gathering places for her extensive family and three generations of loyal customers. With over 30 nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters, Lucy's influence stretched across generations and numerous countries. Family members knew they could always count on her in times of need, as her generous nature and caring heart knew no bounds.

In retirement, Lucy continued to be the heart of her family, hosting gatherings, reunions, and celebrations. Her warm hospitality, affectionate nature, and readiness to help those in need left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Lucy is survived by her devoted husband Ivan, their five children, seven grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and numerous extended family members whose lives she touched so deeply. She was preceded in death by several of her siblings.

Throughout her life, Lucy maintained a steadfast devotion to her Catholic faith. In her later years, she attended Mass every morning, finding strength, purpose, and community in her spiritual practice. Her faith guided her decisions and inspired her generous spirit.

Lucy also found great joy in her garden, nurturing plants with the same care she showed to people. She had a special affinity for orchids, coaxing the most delicate varieties into stunning blooms that brightened her home.

Those who knew Lucy will always remember her remarkable determination. When faced with obstacles, she never saw roadblocks—instead, she pushed forward with unwavering resolve until she found a solution. This resilient spirit carried her family through challenges and inspired everyone around her to persist in the face of adversity.

Lucy's legacy of love, perseverance, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will be cherished, and her spirit will live on through the many lives she touched.

A funeral service was held in celebration of Lucy's life, attended by her husband, all her children, and many members of her large extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Christ The King Catholic Church.

Con profunda tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento de Lucy Díaz, amada esposa, madre, abuela, bisabuela, hermana, tía y amiga. Partió de esta vida a la edad de 85 años.

Nacida el 7 de octubre de 1939 en Maripí, Boyacá, Colombia llamada al nacer Genoveva Lucila Moreno Mongui. Hija de padres agricultores; creció en una familia numerosa y amorosa como una de doce hermanos. A los siete años de edad su familia se vio obligada a huir del hogar a raíz de La Violencia, un período de intenso conflicto político, trasladándose hacia Bogotá en búsqueda de seguridad y estabilidad.

Desde esos difíciles comienzos, Lucy desarrolló una resiliencia inquebrantable y un fuerte sentido del trabajo. A la edad de 12 años ya trabajaba en una fábrica de ropa interior para ayudar en el sustento de su familia. Durante su juventud conoció el amor con Iván Díaz quien se convertiría en su esposo años más tarde. Una relación que se convirtió en el pilar familiar, con su apoyo y aliento Lucy continuó sus estudios y obtuvo una beca completa para convertirse en maestra, un logro que marcó el inicio de una vida dedicada a la educación y el servicio.

Lucy comenzó su carrera como maestra en Bogotá. Con su esposo construyó una hermosa vida. Tuvieron cuatro hijos: Ana, Ivonne, Theophane y Olga mientras vivían en Colombia . Al nacer su hijo Theophane lo diagnosticaron con discapacidad, a raíz de esto tomaron la valiente decisión de emigrar a los Estados Unidos en busca de un mejor tratamiento médico para él.

Lucy llegó a Estados Unidos a la edad de 29 años, llena de esperanza y determinación. Poco después le dieron la bienvenida a su quinta hija, Judith. Se establecieron en Miami a mediados de los años 70, donde Lucy fundó Lucy's Place, Inc. en 1984, un negocio de confección de ropa a medida. Durante 40 años cuidó y expandió su negocio, formando una clientela fiel, convirtiendo su tienda en un espacio muy querido por la comunidad.

Su hogar se convirtió en un lugar de reunión para su extensa familia, con más de treinta sobrinos , siete nietos y tres bisnietas, la influencia de Lucy se extendió a través de generaciones a numerosos países. Los miembros de su familia podían contar con ella en momentos de necesidad, pues su generosidad y su corazón bondadoso no conocían límites.

Incluso luego de su jubilación Lucy continuó siendo el alma de su familia, organizando reuniones, celebraciones y encuentros; su hospitalidad, naturaleza afectuosa y disposición para ayudar dejaron una huella imborrable en todos los que la conocieron.

A lo largo de su vida mantuvo una profunda devoción en su fe católica. En sus últimos años asistió a misa todas las mañanas, encontrando en su práctica una gran fortaleza espiritual. Su fe guió sus decisiones e inspiró su generoso espíritu. También encontraba una gran alegría en su jardín, cuidando de las plantas con el mismo esmero que cuidaba de las personas. Tenía una pasión especial por las orquídeas, logrando que las variedades más delicadas florecieran hermosamente en su hogar.

Lucy deja atrás a su devoto esposo Iván, sus cinco hijos, siete nietos, tres bisnietas, numerosos familiares y amigos cuyas vidas tocó profundamente. Le precedieron en muerte varios de sus hermanos.

Quienes la conocieron siempre recordarán su notable determinación ante los obstáculos; nunca veía barreras, avanzaba con resolución hasta encontrar la solución. Ese espíritu resiliente sostuvo a su familia en momentos difíciles e inspiró a todos los que la rodeaban a persistir ante la adversidad. El legado de amor, perseverancia y compasión de Lucy continuará inspirando a todos, su memoria será atesorada por siempre y su espíritu vivirá en las muchas vidas que tocó.

Se celebró un servicio fúnebre en honor a la vida de Lucy, al que asistieron su esposo, todos sus hijos y muchos miembros de su numerosa familia. En lugar de flores la familia solicita donaciones a Christ The King Catholic Church.
