If one had the privilege to choose the family we are born into, I would  have chosen the Gomez Bunch. However I was blessed with the next best thing. As a young man I was fortunate to spend many years very close to this uncommonly wonderful family.   Titi was the  wisest, sweetest, most generous, yet unassuming soul I have ever known. It is not by mere chance or accident that the entire Gomez family is, in my opinion, among the best of the best and Titi and Joselito were the driving force behind them. Titi's energy always gave me comfort and strength and Joselito was not only like my second father, but also one of the  closest and best friends I've ever had.  My life was forever changed by them and I am forever grateful.

I realized today I didn’t actually know Pita’s first name. To me she was always Pita and I never thought further as she embodied her role as grandmother so well. 

In 8th grade I was lucky enough to get to go on a Gomez family vacation. Pito told everyone we were roommates and I farted all night long. Though quieter (and kinder) in her affection, Pita was so welcoming the entire time. She looked out for me on tiburón watch from the balcony and warned me daily. When she wasn’t on watch, she drew a picture of the whole family on a boat for the trip. She showed me that I was in the drawing. I was so touched and it made me feel so welcome. She told me I was her “otra nieta” so of course I was included. At the end she gave me the picture to commemorate my first Gomez vacation. Pita’s small gestures, large portions of food, and constant kindness always made me feel like family and I always considered her mine. This is how I always remember her.  

Mami, gracias, mas que nada, por todo el amor que nos diste siempre. El amor de una madre maravillosa no tiene precio y nos sostiene y guia todos los dias de nuestra vida. Gracias tambien por tu gracia y buen ejemplo. Gracias por criarnos con amor a Los Estados Unidos y tambien como cubanosamericanos orgullosos. Ya te estrano, Mami, pero se que estas rodeada por el amor de Dios, la Virgen Maria, Papi, y todos nuestros seres queridos que fallecieron antes.. Tu amor y luz seguiran guiandome todos los dias de mi vida.  Con todo mi amor y admiracion, tu hija Lourdes. 

This was the day Titi came to my mother/daughter pinning ceremony for my sorority in college. I was not going to participate but she stepped in to be my mother at this special ceremony. What an incredibly beautiful thing to do for your future daughter in law. I will never forget this day and so many others over the years. 💕

I will miss her dearly but know that she is now reunited with the love of her life (“el buen tipo” as I used to call him). They are together now. ❤️

Pita (or Abuelita as I used to call you), I will never forget how loving you were towards me and all of the grandchildren. I loved spending the weekend with you and Pito in that little apartment where you’d take me to your courtyard of plants that smelled like cherries. One of my favorite memories with you is walking along the shoreline during family vacations to collect seashells with a little hole on the top that we could use to make necklaces out of later on. Also when Ariana and I would sleepover the apartment and you’d chase us around with the “magic” talco. I will miss calling every week to hear your voice, it always made me feel better if I wasn’t feeling my best. Thank you for all of the life lessons. I will never forget the sacrifices you and Pito courageously made so that our family could have a better life. I have loved being so loved by you and will miss you, but knowing that you are reunited with Pito again gives me so much peace. I love you “sooooooooo muchhhh” Pita. Rest in peace. 

Mami y Papi (Titi y Joselito, Pita y Pita) are in absolute joy right now, free of any suffering and together again, forever.
