Robert Earl Greb

GREB, Robert Earl age 89 of Miamisburg, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Kingston of Miamisburg. He was born June 24, 1921 in Decatur, IL to the late Earl and Matilda (Gendry) Greb. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Mary Alice (Walter) Greb who was the longest seated board member in Miamisburg and taught several different ages and programs of physical education, chemistry and ISCS science from 1954 until her retirement in 1988, and his son, Steven Robert Greb of the 1967 class of Miamisburg High School and a double major in marketing and finance as a graduate of the University of Hawaii with double honors. Robert is survived by his daughter, Susan Lynne Greb of Miamisburg; granddaughter, Tisha Greb Jacob (Jim) Marsh of Wilmington; grandson, Charles Steven Walaka Greb of Florida; great-grandchildren, Garret Winston Marsh, Trent Allen Marsh, Sloan Ferrill Marsh; sister, Doris Greb (Dr. Robert) Miller of Decatur, IL; niece, Susan Miller (Pat) Reedy; nephew, Dr. Mark (Denise) Miller; another daughter, Carol Ann Greb (Philip) Smith of Ohio and other grandchildren, Heather Marie Smith and Matthew Philip Smith. Robert was raised in the German Lutheran Missouri Synod Parochial School System and was a graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois majoring in chemistry and chemical engineering. Robert was recruited straight out of college to be a supervising chemist in the Houdai Hershey Project (Manhattan Project) for the Atomic Energy Commission. It was there that he met his future bride Mary Alice, one of two women chemists working on the Atomic Bomb Project under the supervision of Robert. Robert was then chosen and promoted by the Atomic Energy Commission as one of four chemical engineers to come to Dayton, Ohio to start what is now known as the The Mound in Miamisburg for the Atomic Energy Commission. After working at the Mound for ten years, Robert left to work for General Motors. He worked at the Delco Moraine plant in Dayton as a chemical engineer, eventually being promoted to Senior Project Engineer working as both a chemical engineer and a mechanical engineer. Robert was a 3rd generation German Lutheran with the family originating from Darmstadt, Germany in the outer area of Frankfort. Robert was responsible for a specific type of coating that was on or for the bearings and ball bearings that were used by the company. Robert retired after 38 years as the Senior Executive Project Engineer. Robert was also one of the founding members of the Miamisburg Auxiliary Police Department and was a proud member of that group for over twenty years. Robert and his wife, Mary Alice, built the first house on South Seventh St. and helped to pave and put the sidewalks in and he is still the proud owner. Robert and his family have been devout members of the St. Jacob Lutheran Church since they moved here toward the end of WWII. Robert was also an avid sportsman and hunter as well as an excellent marksman who enjoyed raising and training beagles. Family will receive friends during visiting hours scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2011 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at St. Jacob Lutheran Church at 213 E. Central Ave., Miamisburg. A memorial service will follow at 5:00PM at the church, officiated by Pastor Michael G. Hout. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jacob Lutheran Church in memory of Robert.
