Carol Jean Follmer, 90 of Monroe, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026. She was born on April 24, 1935, in Middletown, to her parents, the late Glenn Jacoby Maier and Hilda Louise (Epp) Maier of Monroe, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Edwin Maier of Middletown.
Carol is survived by her son Michael D. Follmer (Pamela) of Middletown, Ohio and her daughter, Sharon A. Follmer of Monroe, Ohio. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Kelly, Stephanie and Kayley, and six great-grandchildren.
Carol graduated high school in 1953, from Middletown High School and was especially proud to have worked for the HR department at Armco during her high school years. She excelled in school and was excited to have won an award, and her own typewriter, for being the fastest typist and for her shorthand skills. She married in 1953 and lived on a farm in Liberty Township, owned by her husband’s great-grandmother. She moved to Monroe in 1957 where she spent the remainder of her life. After her children were older, she was asked to go to work for the branch manager at First National Bank in Monroe, later to become First Financial Bank. This led to a wonderful career, where she worked at several locations, and retired as a bank manager at the Monroe Branch. She was also a faithful member at Monroe United Methodist Church. She was privileged to share life with and work for many wonderful people during this time, which resulted in many lifelong friends.
She was a loving and awesome mother, a great cook, a highly skilled seamstress and enjoyed various arts and crafts. She excelled in knitting, quilt-making, and embroidery. She made clothes for her children, grandchildren, and grand-daughter’s dolls, table decorations, and placemats for all seasons. She repaired flags for organizations in the local community. She made many bed quilts and baby quilts and attended quilt shows with her church friends. She knitted prayer shawls for the church and was sure to knit colorful keepsake Christmas stockings for her children and grandchildren. After receiving a dollhouse, she spared no expense to lavishly decorate and equip it. She found she loved to travel after the request of her neighbor to accompany her on a trip, after which she began to take many cruises and organized trips across the US and around the world. She loved to document these trips in elaborate photo albums decorated with purchased and handmade items to commemorate each trip. She was an avid card maker, making cards to send to family and friends for all seasons and occasions. She loved flowers, gardening and canning, and in her early years entered her wares in the county and state fairs. She was an avid reader and cherished her time with book club friends.
Carol will be remembered for her deep love for life, her family and her enduring faith. A visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Breitenbach Anderson Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow the next day at 11:00 am at Woodside Cemetery in Middletown, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Middletown or Monroe United Methodist Church.
