Cathryn was born in 1932 in Amarillo. She grew up in Rule, Texas, with a large family in the midst of cotton country. She credited the hard work of growing up on a farm during tough years for giving her a strong work ethic, a love of family, an appreciation for little things, and a can-do attitude. She was a star basketball player in her high school years and still loved sports on tv. Cathy went on to live in Quanah, Lewisville, and Midland, working along the way at jobs from Piggly Wiggly to Texas Instruments to years as a bank teller to support her family.
Cathryn adored her sons, born of her first marriage to the late Eldon Thane. She shared many happy years with her second husband, the late Richard Cathey, of Midland. At her death she was still dear friends with her ex-husband, Rudy Arnold, of Stanton, who was at her side.
Cat was an independent spirit, almost to a fault, and loved nothing more than to be out going and doing and dancing. She was an amazingly resourceful woman who could stretch a nickel to twenty cents, and her gift for humor would bring a laugh to any conversation. Her personal strength and determination were an example to those who knew her.
Mourning her passing are son Larry Thane and wife Marilyn; son Nathan Thane and wife Cindy; grandchildren Anthony, Cynthia, Phillip and Ethan; and great-granddaughters Baeley and Alina. She is dearly missed by her sisters Donna McGaughey, Audrey Jo Killebrew, Jackie Pendleton, and brother E.C. Smith. She is predeceased by her sisters Wanda Townsend, Mary Anders, Harvey Jean Evans, brother Bill Smith, and parents Gladys and Egbert Smith.
The family is grateful for the help and support of her lifelong friends Linda Agan and Mary Norris as well as her friend Jeremy Schiff.
At Cathryn's request, there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made in her honor to Helping Hands, 1301 Brinson Ln., Midland 79703.
