

James Craig “Jimmy” Porter, 61, of Midland, passed away on December 26, 2011. Jimmy was born in Midland on December 12, 1950 to J. C. Porter and Emma Lavern Shults Porter. He was a graduate of Midland Lee High. After high school he went on to UTPB and received a Bachelors of Arts with a concentration in Creative Writing, after which he continued his education at UT Austin and received his Masters degree. He was a lifelong resident of Midland. He also maintained a lake residence in Colorado City, and he loved to fish. Jimmy was a part of the Labrador Retrievers’ Breeders Association and the American Legion. He was Texas’ youngest published author in the year of 1974. During his lifetime he worked as a building contractor, a custom painter, an oil & gas operator in Texas and Mississippi, and as a professor at Midland College. Also, Jimmy was strong in his Christian faith. Jimmy is preceded in death by both his parents, and his sister, Linda Porter Rice. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Porter of Midland; his step-daughter, Meagan Springer; his niece, Angie Rice; and the Shults family. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, January 2, 2011 at 10:00am at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.
