

Jay Eugene “Gene” Floyd of Midland passed away February 27, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born March 11, 1936 to Clay McLane Floyd and Laura Maxine Tom Floyd in Midland. Gene, a third generation Midlander, and grandson of B.W. Floyd and Mabel Hill Floyd and G.W. Tom and Irene Flanagan Tom, pioneer Midland and Martin County ranchers, graduated from high school and Junior College at New Mexico Military Institute and received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce Degree from Texas Christian University in 1958. Upon graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army. He was discharged with the rank of Captain upon completing his active duty and reserve military obligation.
Gene worked for Continental Oil Company for ten years, resigning in 1969 as Division Landman in Continental’s Denver office. He then worked for Adobe Oil Company as manager of its land department until 1971 when he and Joel R. Miller formed the petroleum partnership of Miller & Floyd that endured until 1991 when it dissolved so the partners could enjoy semi-retirement. Gene, a Certified Professional Landman, was General Partner of Floyd Energy, Ltd. and manager of R.R. Herrell Properties, Ltd, both family partnerships, at the time of his death.
Gene was an avid outdoorsman who particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a long time member of the American and Permian Basin Association of Petroleum Landmen, a former member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, a past president of the Midland High School Bulldog Football Booster Club, a past president of Midland Country Club, and a Racquet Club Board Member. In addition, Gene, a descendant of both paternal and maternal citizens of the Republic of Texas, was a member of Texas’ First Families, The Sons of the Republic of Texas and The Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. “DiDi” played an active role in the lives of his grandchildren, attending as many sporting and school events as he could. He will be missed dearly.
Gene, who married Sharon Lee Herrell of Midland December 23, 1956, is survived by Sharon, his best friend and wife of 54 years; his three children, Michael McLane “Mike” Floyd and wife Kim and daughter Shaina Weaver Dunn, her husband Ryan and their son Rayden, of Ft. Worth, Robert William “Bobby” Floyd and wife Sharon and their children, Michelle, Robert, Michael and Coleman, all of Midland, and Shannon Elizabeth Floyd Board and husband Marty, and their children, Martin, Michael and Marshall of Midland. Gene is also survived by his sister, D’Aun Floyd Cunningham of Ft. Worth and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located at 1412 W. Illinois, Midland, Texas.
