

On Saturday, January 4, 2014, Thelma ‘Sis’ DeWitt-Smith, left her weakened earthly body to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in Heaven. “Sis”, as she was affectionately known and referred to by most, was born November 1, 1940, to Wesley DeWitt, Sr. and Myrtle Warren-DeWitt, in Midland TX. She was raised and lived her entire life in Midland.
Thelma was baptized in her family church, Greater Saint Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church as an infant, and continued to be an active member of the congregation until her passing. Throughout her full and fruitful life, Thelma held many prominent positions within her church: Sunday School Superintendent, Y.P.D. Director, Women’s Missionary Society President, Senior Usher Board President, Junior Usher Board Director, and was the Trustee Board Pro-Tem until her glorious appearance at Heaven’s gate.
In her professional life, Thelma worked as a caregiver, took some college courses, held an administrative position at the former Parkview Hospital, and was a retired phone operator from Southwestern Bell. Thelma was also a caregiver for many years to three very special children (now adults) whom she loved greatly as if they were her own. Besides working for the Lord in His House, Thelma enjoyed many other hobbies. She was well known for her love of cooking and baking for others, as well as for sewing and numerous types of craft-making. She found tremendous joy in spending time with her great-grand children, great nieces and nephews, who visited frequently, and family en masse.
Thelma leaves to celebrate her life and passing to Glory her children: Robert DeWitt(Vangie) of Odessa, Willie DeWitt of Midland; Tommy J. DeWitt(Sandra) of San Antonio; Nancy D. Jackson(Calvin) and Lisa R. Smith of Midland. Her sisters: Annie Lowe(Ivory) of Port Arthur TX and Elvera Bryant of Midland. Her Grandchildren: Gary, Anita Kishae, Quinton, Chris, Quincy Sr., Priscilla, Vivica, and six Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters:Allyne Harrell, Elaine Banks, Luby Whiteside, brother Wesley ‘Bubba’ DeWitt, Jr., as well as her traveling companion, friend, and husband Wallace ‘WC’ Smith. Thelma shall be greatly missed by the plethora of people whose lives she touched throughout her Blessed life!
The Family would like to give the greatest love and heartfelt appreciation to the staff of StarCare Hospice of Odessa TX, as well as her niece/friend/mama sitter, Gloria Faye Banks.
