Alice Spencer, beloved wife, sister, friend, mother and grandmother, died in Midlothian, VA, on Saturday, Jan. 10, at age 80.
Born on July 24, 1945 in Raleigh, N.C., to Irving Eugene “Red” and Ovater Doggett, Alice attended Needham B. Broughton High School and the University of North Carolina Greensboro before settling down as a wife and mother.
Alice was smart and quick-witted, with an intense curiosity. She loved nature, especially gardening, flowers and dogs (though not squirrels when they messed with the bird feeders). She liked all kinds of music, from the symphony to Willie Nelson, and was a terrific dancer. Carolina Beach, where her parents had a home and she spent many summers, was her happy place.
Later in life, she enjoyed watching birds in the backyard, talking to her wonderful neighbors, and visiting with her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Her survivors include John Corson Spencer, her husband of 54 years, of Midlothian; daughter Kris Worrell (and husband Dan Sher) of Baltimore, MD; stepdaughter Beth Spencer (and son Jacob) of South Hill, VA; stepdaughter Karen Barksdale (and husband Michael) of High Point, N.C.; grandchildren Ella and Gram Sher; sister Elizabeth Hickmon of Wilmington, N.C.; and extended family and friends who treasure the memories she leaves behind.
A gathering of Alice’s family and friends will begin at 1 p.m. with her funeral service at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation in Alice’s memory to the Richmond SPCA: https://richmondspca.org/how-you-can-help/donate/.
In closing, the family wishes to express their love and gratitude to the staff at Our Lady of Hope Health Center in Richmond, who took such loving care of Alice.
