He grew up in Marietta, OH and was the star of the high school basketball team and president of his senior class. Al attended Marietta College and Kenyon College, where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. In 1957 he became a naval aviator and married Joan Elizabeth Barberie, his wife of 61 years. Al started his naval career in Bermuda flying seaplanes. He and his family were stationed in Birmingham, AL; San Diego and Los Alamitos, CA; Milton, FL; and Virginia Beach, VA. During Al’s time in the Navy, he traveled all over the world. After retiring from the military, he flew for several corporations in Raleigh and Greensboro, NC. Al was known for his wonderful sense of humor, joke-telling, and kindness. He was an avid reader, furniture maker, and woodworker, and he volunteered at the Midlothian Public Library.
He enjoyed family camping trips and, throughout the years, spending time at homes on the Outer Banks, the Rappahannock River, and in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
