She was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe McNair and Josephine Simons McNair, brothers, Roscoe McNair and Larry McNair and her husband of fifty years, Jon Swan.
She is survived by her daughter, Jonna Briana Thoma (JR) of Haymarket, VA; and son, Jon Lewis Wakeman Swan, II (Shelley) of Albany, GA; brother-in-laws, Gary H. Swan & Frank Martin; niece and nephews, Angela McDonnell (Matt), Gabriel & Jonathan Swan; and grand-daughters, Riley & Katelyn Thoma and Evelyn & Charlotte Swan.
Born in Portsmouth Virginia March 16, 1949 to Roscoe & Josephine McNair, Barbara was the only girl stuck in the middle of her two brothers. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1967 and went on to work all sorts of jobs. She found passion in sales, whether it was selling jewelry at Carreras Jewelers or William Jeffries Jewelry or selling cars for Carmax where she had been for the past several years. She never met a stranger and had several customers come back time and again because of the relationship she started with them. She loved her Carmax family and over the last three years, they have been so supportive of her.
Barbara and Jon married August 26, 1972 and were able to spend their 50th anniversary in August 2022 in Sandbridge with their entire family before Jon got sick in late 2022. Barbara was by his side till the very end. She enjoyed horses, dogs, sitting outside reading, cruising, casinos, crabs, the beach, naps and spending time with family. As GiGi, she enjoyed being able to spend time with her grandkids whether it was in Haymarket, down in Georgia or at the beach.
Barbara was a strong, stubborn woman and when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer back in November 2020 and was given eighteen to twenty-four months to live she took that as a challenge and fought it for just shy of three years continuing to work as long as she could. Even with the passing of her husband of fifty years and her older brother in the last year, she continued to fight as best she could hardly complaining of pain.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM – 12 PM on Friday, November 3 at Woody’s Funeral Home off Huguenot Road prior to the funeral service at 12 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Caribbean Lifetime Missions, a mission their dear friend Isaac Egbewole has led for over 30 years, lifetimemissions.org/donate. Barbara always had a special place in her heart for Isaac and Isaac and his family drove all the way up from Atlanta this Summer just to visit with her for a couple hours.
