Bruce Lee Fibich passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, in hospice at Johnston-Willis Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Thaddeus G. and Mrs. Vivian V. Garner Fibich; his wife’s parents, Mr. Robert A. and Mrs. Helen T. Eisterhold Stanton; and his brothers-in-law, Patrick, William, and Robert Stanton, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Catherine (Cathy) Stanton Fibich; their daughter and her husband, Kristina and Daniel Schwaninger; their son and his wife, Steven and Kelly Fibich; grandchildren, Max Gray, Erin Schwaninger, and Griffin, Reed, and Porter Fibich; sister and her husband, Jacqueline and Dennis Burroughs; sister, Barbara Lee; brother-in-law and his wife, Sean Stanton and Dawn Finnen; sister-in-law, Lynn Stanton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bruce was born in Washington, D.C., and lived there and in the surrounding area for most of this life before moving to Richmond, VA, in 2016. He attended Calvert School and Mackin High School, 1964, and was a 1975 graduate of the University of Maryland. He served in the Army National Guard and worked for the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, MD, for many years, retiring in 2000.
Anyone who knew Bruce knew of his love of model trains which began when he was about seven years old with his nose pressed against the window of a hobby shop. It continued for the rest of his life with a model train layout that was set up year-round in every house he lived in. Through the years, he enjoyed annual family vacations in Rehoboth Beach, DE, and the beaches of North Carolina.
In 1995, he fulfilled a dream of building a home and moving to “the property” in the country. For the 21 years that he and Cathy lived there, he enjoyed learning about the benefits of being a good steward of the property through the State of Maryland Forestry Program, reinforcing animal habitats and managing the canopy and forest floor. He knew every inch of that property, walking the entire acreage regularly. From the days long ago when he took his young children sleigh riding down that huge hill to the time many years later when he lived there, he loved the planning that went along with managing and improving the property, although he never did learn to enjoy cutting grass. In his early retirement years, he began volunteering at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, West River, MD. After retirement, he spent most of his days outdoors on the property, finding many things that needed his attention and many happy hours discussing world events with his brother-in-law, Dennis, until he and Cathy embarked on their new life in Richmond where pleasant times were spent with family and new and old friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 12:00 noon at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive, North Chesterfield, VA 23235. Interment will follow in the St. Edward Columbarium. A reception will be held immediately following the funeral at Woody’s Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, VA 23113.
