Charles Leonard Bugg, affectionately known as “Bugg,” passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 79. Born on April 3, 1946, in South Hill, Virginia to William Joseph and Annetta Bugg, Charles was known for his warm personality—he could strike up a conversation with anyone, turning brief encounters into lasting friendships.
Charles graduated from the University of Richmond in 1968, a milestone that marked the beginning of a life devoted to learning, service, and family. In 1971, he married Sharon Hudnall Bugg, his beloved wife, who survives him. Together, they built a partnership rooted in laughter, adventure, and unwavering support. Charles was a devoted father to his two daughters, always there to support them through skinned knees, challenging high school tennis matches and all of life's hurdles, teaching them that they could achieve anything they set their minds to.
Charles’s joy for life was evident in everything he did. A sports enthusiast, he was a passionate golfer, tennis player, and a lifelong—and sometimes fanatic—New York Yankees fan. He loved to travel, particularly relishing cruise adventures. Yet, nothing brought him more happiness than cheering on his grandsons from the sidelines or watching his granddaughter’s performances.
His commitment to his career and his community was deep. He worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for over 40 years and served in the National Guard. Charles was an active member of Amelon United Methodist Church in Madison Heights, and, following retirement and a move to Richmond, Reveille United Methodist Church. He also served as President of the Madison Heights Ruritan Club for many years, where his leadership and genuine kindness had a lasting impact.
Charles is survived by his wife, Sharon; his daughters and son in-laws, Kathy Bugg (Larry) Parker and Christy Bugg (John) Kosco; and his four grandchildren Jack, Charlie, Ben and Emily; brother and sister in-law, William Joseph "Bill" Bugg, Jr. and Elaine Bugg, and their children Joseph "Joe" Bugg, and Susan Paullin.
A celebration of Charles’s life will be held on September 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the CMT Research Foundation (cmtrf.org), a cause close to their hearts.
