He was born on July 31, 1946, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to the late Harold E. and Margaret Rodgers.
As a child of a military family, Charles moved often, experiencing life across the country and abroad alongside his Army father, mother, and three siblings. At just 16 years old, he made the courageous decision to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Barney for two years. Following his honorable discharge, Charles continued his service through the Naval Reserve and later the National Guard. His deep pride in his military service and his country remained with him throughout his life.
Outside of his military service, Charles found joy in the outdoors—especially fishing and hunting. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Rifle Association, and Healing Waters, where he found community and camaraderie.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret Rodgers; his brother, James Rodgers; and his sister, Kathleen Rodgers.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Susan Rodgers, of 26 years; his stepson, Nathaniel Batey (Nicole); his granddaughter, Kiara Batey; his sisters-in-law, Terry Klimek (Danny) and Rena Koger; his lifelong Navy brothers, Allen “Mac” McQuire and Robert Mitchell; his church community at Cameron Avenue Church of Christ; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the home care nurses who lovingly cared for Charles over the past two years. Your dedication and compassion will never be forgotten.
