Sorry to see that George passed many years ago. I worked with him for only one year but he had a very positive impact on me in such a limited time. The knowledge and humility he had was incredible.  It was right after I graduated college so I did not know how lucky I was to work with him then, but now I realize it.  

What made me think of him today was that he used to joke that in order to be successful in business that when you walk down the hall you need to look serious.  As I walked down the hall  today close to 30 years later on the 40th floor of a building several hundred miles away from Richmond I channeled that bent head scrunched eyebrows that made me laugh so much then.

I knew George in Fayetteville, NC  when he married my friends sister,Karen. We'd all meet at times at the Hinkle's house till A and Judy  moved back to TN. It is hard keeping up with folks when spread all over the U.S. It is Aug 10 2012 and I have just now found this sad news. Karen and family, I am sorry!!! Dear Matthews Family, George was a good friend during my tenure with him in Internal Audit at Signet Bank. His wit was a class act and he would have me in stitches in his office. He taught me a lot about IT during its infancy. I am so sorry and I know he will be missed dearly.

To the Matthews' Family - I just learned of George's passing yesterday and wanted to send my heartfelt condolences to you. It was truly a sad day for us former Signet auditors when we heard the news. 

I speak on behalf of many of us who worked with George during our Signet audit days - he was an extraordinary guy who will always be remembered for his sense of humor that he shared with us on a daily basis and for the love of his family! Thank you for such a beautiful memorial service in honor of George.  

George was a fantastic neighbor and a very special person.  We have so many happy memories of George, going back to the days when the boys were very small.  He never drove by our house in the neighborhood that he didn't smile, wave and often stopped the Suzuki Samari for a chat.  One of my fondest memories was during Chad's first soccer season, laughing with George and Karen as we watched our five year olds swarm the soccer ball.  George always had us laughing on the sidelines!   George was always out there for pick-up ball games in the neighborhood, too, playing with his sons, our sons and all the other little guys.  Thanks for the great memories.

I never met George, but 'knew' him through backpackinglight. I always enjoyed his offbeat sense of humor and good will toward his fellow BPLers. He will certainly be sorely missed.

So kind and with such a great sense of humor. I will always remember Mr. Matthews as the best neighbor imaginable. He will be missed be many. We'll keep praying for all of you.

I never had the pleasure of meeting George in person, but I always knew that he was a nice, kind-hearted guy.  He was always willing to help me with whatever I needed. He will be missed greatly.  My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

George and I both share a passion for hiking and the outdoors. I will greatly miss swapping trail stories with him at the office. I feel very lucky to have known and worked with George for over a decade. He truly was one of the nicest and most patient gentleman you could ever meet. He will be missed.

My friend George was a co-worker I sat beside for years. I grew to know George in a way many people missed out on, therefore I consider myself very blessed. I will miss our morning talks about whatever was in the headlines or on our minds that day. I can't count the number of morning conversations we shared for years and the many late nights we shared working. I will miss being able to turn my head and he always there willing to listen to anything I wanted to say. He was one of the few people I aspire to be like and therefore he will forever be in my heart as friend, mentor and real life hero.  My prayers are with everyone affected by this tragic loss especially Karen and his two sons Todd and Chad.

George was a great guy. I have no memory of him ever being anything but kind to everyone around him and being a happy person. He was always willing to go out of his way to be helpful and friendly. He will be missed. His friendship will be missed.

All of us who worked with George during our days at Signet Bank know how lucky we were to work with such a wonderfully kind, funny guy. He will be missed by so many people.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

I had the pleasure of working with George at Wells Fargo and I called him Mr. Database as he was a Whiz at finding info on the Verizon & AT&T databases.  He was also one of the kindness men I have ever met and he would assist me in any way he could.  As we worked together he would interject his sense of humor and his contagious laugh and make you smile and laugh along with him.  We will certainly miss George and he will forever hold a special place in our hearts along with all the fond memories of our times together!  I will keep George and his family in my thoughts and prayers!

While I only knew George for a few months, I enjoyed the chance to get to know him via working together at Wells Fargo.  He was always so willing to offer help when needed and one of the most understanding individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting.
